I have been in CSNSW since late 2007, have held a variety of roles. I am passionate about the role and especially training/mentoring.
I am a very curious person and am always learning. I love podcasts and audio books, so when I am driving I am always learning. Curiosity is crucial for this role, as is sense of humour!
Is there an area you are particularly passionate about mentoring others in?
I have a variety of skills you tell me what is important to you. You drive this.
A neglected area is interviewing skills such as deployment MI effectively, learning how to have targeted behaviour change conversations and utilising basic personal counselling skills. We spend a lot of time interviewing offenders; how can we do this more effectively? Our job is about communication and improving that is a skill that translates to all areas of our lives.
Leadership is also an area that I think is crucial, learning how to develop, mentor and provide effective feedback to staff.
Finally, I am passionate about teaching and would welcome anyone who is also training staff and work with you to enhance you in class engagement. “The first year of teaching… is leaning how to teach!”.
Have a look at what I have to offer and let me know what is important for you. I teach so I can learn. Let’s talk, this should be driven by you not me.

Current Position including level (ie PO3/A06): Probation Officer, Community Corrections Tasmania, Tasmania PACCOA Delegate
Fields of expertise/previous employment: Case management
Qualifications: Bachelor of Science (Criminal Justice), Certificate IV in Correctional Practice
A bit about yourself:
After a very long-distance relationship with my now husband, I moved to Tasmania from California in 2001. I have enjoyed assimilating to the Tasmania way and my family and I love to get out in our beautiful surroundings.
I have been employed as a Probation Officer in Tasmania for 14 years. I enjoy the challenges of building good relationships with offenders, seeing the positive changes that they may make during their order and working with my team. In 2019, Tasmania commenced home detention with electronic monitoring and I had been involved since the beginning of supervising those on these type of orders as well as training my colleagues in policy and procedures. I’ve recently moved into the Programs Unit and I am enjoying the delivery space and linking with offenders on a different level.
Is there an area you are particularly passionate about mentoring others in? (optional):
I believe the best way to feel confident in what you do is building a strong foundation of knowledge. I am passionate about providing good implementation of the basics of the role and procedures used, to allow one to feel self-assured in their abilities. I also believe building good rapport with offenders is one of the keys to compliance and teaching Probation Officers the balance of this, in their own style is something I enjoy.

A bit about yourself:
Born in Australia lived overseas and finished my schooling life overseas so when I returned to Australia in 1985 I had to relearn the language and the culture. Worked in factories until 1995 when I decided to get back to studies and change my career path. I started studies in the field of community work while working in disabilities for about 6 years. From Tafe went to University and completed the Social Science degree. Since then have been working in corrections firstly in the private sector for about 7 years and then transferred to government where I have been since. While at corrections I have been working in all areas of program delivery such as treatment programs, transitions and also skill development programs. I could say that program delivery is my passion, my love and what keeps me in the agency so long.
Is there an area you are particularly passionate about mentoring others in? (optional):
I have been in programs for a long time so can talk and coach in that area for ever so if I can help others getting to know more about programs, I would be happy. I further have a lot of experience in working with those who have committed a sexual offence. We delivery sexual offending programs here and have good knowledge of the four stages of sexual offending and mapping out the offending behaviour. I also worked in a DV program for a year so have some knowledge of that cohort as well but not extensive. If I cannot answer a question, I definitely have a group of people I work with that I can tap into.

Sharon Wilson
Name: Sharon Wilson
State: Northern Territory
Current Position: Team Leader
Fields of expertise/previous employment:
13 years experience working with Community Corrections, initially as a Probation and Parole Officer (PPO) and for the past 8 years, as a Team Leader. I have had extensive experience working at remote offices in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy, Wadeye and Groote Eylandt.
I have taken on roles as the Senior Operations Manager for a short secondment and recently spent 12 months as the Roving Team Leader, allowing me to work at different offices covering periods of leave or minimal staffing. This was an amazing opportunity afforded me giving me insight into the different cultural groups in the Northern Territory.
One of the things I have loved about the Roving role was the opportunity it gave me to work with less experienced PPOs where I was able to mentor and support them through their Cert IV in Correctional Practice and negotiate the challenging role we play within the Department.
Whilst I always adhere to management framework, I love to work with Probation and Parole Officers who can see the good in our offenders and come up with practical solutions to problems, work with the families and make feel good about themselves.
Currently I am overseeing our Community Work team who are kicking goals working with our Fines Recovery Unit where people, not necessarily on community based orders, are undertaking community work to pay off their criminal fines. We have, in conjunction with an educational service, just run a Cert I in Construction for our offenders. We had four people successfully achieve their Cert 1, a huge achievement for people who had never held any employment or had any skillset.
Prior to working for Community Corrections, I worked extensively in real estate and administrative roles as well as 12 months as an Electoral Officer for a Government counsellor.
Qualifications:
Cert IV in Correctional Practice
Cert IV in Leadership and Management
Cert IV in Training and Assessment (1 unit to complete)
A bit about yourself:
Over 50 (J), who has been working in Community Corrections for the past 13 years. I love my job however outside of work I have 3 adult children, 4 grandchildren (yes hard to believe) and 2 inherited grandchildren (step grandchildren). I grew up in Western Australia before moving to the Territory in 1990.
I moved to NSW where I lived for 8 years, both in Sydney and Deniliquin, where I worked in real estate, before moving back to Darwin.
I am passionate about my friends, don’t tolerate people who distort the truth to make themselves popular and am very good at providing support to those in need. Some will describe me as having a “resting bitchface” but I can always be relied upon to help out when things go pearshaped.
Is there an area you are particularly passionate about mentoring others in?
I love to work with people to help them achieve the best they can be. Our role is a difficult one and to have someone who can provide the “safe space” to discuss matters, I believe, is very beneficial.

A bit about yourself:
I commenced working with Community Corrections as a Monitoring Officer in 2018 at the introduction of home detention in Tasmania. Prior to this I was employed in the retail environment for 12 years, as well as working in insurance and government roles.
After commencing with Community Corrections, I moved into the offender supervision space in 2021, and quickly gained experience in report writing and managing offenders on community-based orders (including parole). I recently completed a secondment to Court Mandated Diversion and have since returned to the electronic monitoring space on secondment as a Monitoring Officer to conclude July 2025. I enjoy the work-life balance afforded by shift work and have also benefited by gaining up-to-date knowledge of electronic monitoring (Eagle / Buddi) while utilising down-time during shift work to focus on recent study.
Is there an area you are particularly passionate about mentoring others in?
I have a keen interest in sharing my skills and experience in case management. I am passionate about building capacity in my peers through resource sharing, training and collaboration. I very much believe the mentor program should be a two-way learning opportunity.
